About us

Started by a local historian with a passion for the strange past of Brighton & Sussex, we run walking tours around Brighton, Hove and the South Downs.

We have two regular tours in Brighton – our Witchcraft & Magic Tour, and our Free Tour. We can also run private tours for individuals or groups, starting from £40.

I don’t want to spoil any of the surprises, but some of the information we discovered was absolutely incredible, you genuinely won’t believe some of it!

I was blown away by Ursula's passion, expertise and storytelling! The tour is full of fascinating anecdotes, historical insights, and thought-provoking perspectives about Brighton, Sussex, and English history. I learned so much at every stop we made, and left feeling inspired to dive deeper. The walk itself was very manageable, around a mile through the city centre. Ursula provided a fascinating précis of Brighton’s links to the histories of witchcraft, Wicca and magic and placed the tales in a firm social context within each time period. Best of all was her explanation of key characters and personalities who were connected to the spaces we covered on the tour and she really brought these wonderful people to life. An hour and a half, a mile and a half, and significantly more occult knowledge than I arrived with. Our guide wove together an astonishing cast — Aleister Crowley, Genesis P-Orridge and the Temple of Psychic Youth, and the mother of modern British witchcraft herself — in a captivating and cohesive manner.
What sets this apart is a genuinely inquisitive mind that makes connections others might overlook — between history, the supernatural, and counterculture; and what it is about Brighton specifically that has made it such fertile ground for the esoteric.
The walking tours route extends from the Lanes up to the top of Kemptown — I'll leave the destination as a surprise, but it involves, Bloody Mary, Eastern Mystics, and the mother of modern British witchcraft.

FAQs

Can I just turn up?

Please email strangestrolls@gmail.com to book a place on any of our tours. This is so we can plan for how many people are coming and let you know if there are any emergency cancellations.

What should I bring?

Please wear comfy shoes and suncream/warm clothes depending on the weather. A water bottle is also a good idea. Finally, if you haven’t paid in advance bring some cash or means of making a bank transfer to pay for the tour.

Does the tour still go ahead if it’s raining?

Weather here can famously be changeable so the tour will go ahead unless the weather is extreme (and we will always let you know if this is the case.) If rain is forecast pelase bring a rain jacket or umbrella.

Can I book a private tour?

Yes! I love taking private tours and can also adapt itineraries depending on what you’re interested in. Please contact me to book a private or bespoke tour for you or your group.

Can you speak at my group?

I’m happy to give talks on the history of Brighton & Hove, particularly on wicthcraft, magic and occult history. Please get in touch and we can arrange a time that suits your group.
